Twenty web site fundamentals
by Jennifer Proia

Here are some parameters to consider when developing your web site, or if you already have a web presence, this list may give you some fresh ideas to consider for your next update:

1. Be clear about the purpose for your web site – Is it to generate new leads? To distribute information? To turn prospects into buyers? To get people to call to schedule an in-person meeting? Determine the #1 goal of the site and reflect that in your text. Also, use an appropriate “call to action” on every page.

2. Use graphics strategically – Small, well-placed, relevant images are great. Especially pictures of people. All should be small enough that they load quickly and must be related to the content around it.

3. Experiment with color – How would a colored background look, instead of plain white? Colored or textured backgrounds can spice up the page without adding to the load time. But test your choices - the background color should be easy on the eyes (i.e. no bright or garish colors). Also consider coloring text. Just don't make text bright blue (people will think it's a link). Use just a few colors for a clean, professional look.

4. Keep it organized – Make sure the site is organized and easy to follow. If you were visiting it for the first time, would you be frustrated? People shouldn't have to do a lot of "back and forth" to get around. Make the navigation a "no brainer". It should be a subconscious, intuitive process.

5. Limit the animation – "Flash animations" (moving images) are interesting to some people, but not to most. A lot of people resent having to sit through an animated introduction or see a rotating banner that distracts them.

6. Be brief and concise – Do you read long sections of text on the web? No! Well, other people don't either. Keep your copy brief and to the point. Two or three brief paragraphs per page is a good rule of thumb.

7. Entice visitors with freebies – Get as many visitors to your site as possible by enticing them to come with something special you offer (a free quote, articles, tips, samples, etc. Offer them as much as you can. Ask them to refer a friend too if they benefited from the information on your site. >>
